france-gaston-chicken Originally uploaded by mfioritto This picture is from some of the first I ever snapped while living oversees. We went to visit my Grandfather’s sister in southern France and Gaston was her son. He liked to drink a little bit. In this shot he’s holding the rooster that my brother Mark and I had to catch and that Angela…
Mia jumping in our backyard
Mia jumping in our backyard Originally uploaded by mfioritto Here’s another shot from my files. This is Mia jumping in our backyard in Arizona. She was a pretty kinetic kid. I used to take pictures of the kids when I was trying out new film or a lighting setup or lens. They were usually at the tail end of a…
Could you source a new Family of Man exhibit from Flickr?
I have been spending a bit of time with Flickr recently and have been impressed with some of the photography I have viewed. I started wondering if you could source an exhibit like Steichen’s Family of Man using Flickr? They received over 2 million images from photographers across the globe, then winnowed that down to 10,000 and then made a…
Portrait of Mia – 4-22-2008
chicago-mia-blackies-4-22-2008 Originally uploaded by mfioritto A new portrait of Mia with the Canonet. There are these wall sconces at Blackies and as she moved towards the one at our table I shot the picture. I’m having fun with my new-old rangefinder.
Portrait of Aaron Fioritto
aaron-portrait Originally uploaded by mfioritto I ran across this negative last night. I really like this shot of my son Aaron Fioritto. I’m sure I was testing lights or a new background but I don’t really remember shooting it.
Near miss
I was on the bus the other morning and saw a doorman (on the left) trying to hail a taxi. I had my camera so I thought if someone would come into the frame on the right it might make a good shot. The woman on the right came into the frame and stopped. At this point I just needed…
Looks like a half-frame shot
I had some Ilford XP-2 processed and scanned at Walgreens. They messed up the scans on the CD (at least the negs were cut right) so all of the pics look like they are from a half-frame camera. I kinda liked it. In this photo, Misake and Aaron Fioritto.
My new camera – Canonet Q17 G111
I picked up an old Canonet Q17 G111 rangefinder on ebay and shot my first roll of film through it this weekend. Years ago I owned a series of Leicas. I started out with a beat up M3 and 50mm lens then came across a super clean M2 so I bought that. I sold the M3 and picked up a…
Funny pics in the closet
mike-okinawa-1961-hat Originally uploaded by mfioritto I found this in a tray of Ektachrome slides. That’s me in the hat. The picture was taken in 1961 in Naha, Okinawa where my parents were stationed. By the way, that’s me with the cigar in the post below. Car seats, seat belts, no smoking? Not my generation, we grew up on second hand…
Scanning old Ektachrome slides
I have been scanning some old Ektachrome slides that are over 40 years old. Most have a magenta to red cast to them and some are almost faded completely away. Interspersed into the group are a few Kodachromes. What a difference. They are still vibrant and fade free. This is my first attempt at trying to color correct and restore…
